We put a lot of pressure on ourselves when it comes to goal setting.
At the start of every year we set goals for the next 12 months.. and most of us give up within days.
As entrepreneurs, we have big goals in mind for our revenue, profits, income, and also for our lifestyle. Are your goals motivating you to take action, or are they giving you imposter syndrome and holding you back?
I love setting goals, but I prefer to make them as easy to achieve as possible. Here are my four non-negotiables for simple goal setting that actually works!
Step 1: Write down your five-year goal (not your one-year goal).
The truth? You can’t get that much done in a year. You can start to change, get the ball rolling, but you won’t be able to build momentum. The months will fly by, and you’ll find yourself stressing about the fact that you’re running out of time to complete your goal.
Take the pressure off.
Think of how far the top athletes have come in 5 years compared to their first year. Think of the other entrepreneurs that inspire you, and look at their momentum over their first year compared to their first 5 years. You’re aiming for big success, give yourself time to achieve it and enjoy the journey.
Step 2: Work on your mindset.
The only thing that can stop you is your thoughts. So if yours are currently along the lines of “I don’t know if I can do this”, let’s switch that script out with one of these:
“This works for others, it can work for me too” “The only thing I have to do to succeed is not give up” “One step at a time adds up to a lot of steps”
Step 3: Brainstorm actions that will help you achieve your goal.
Sit down with your laptop or a pen and paper for at least 10 minutes and brainstorm everything you can think of that will help you achieve your goal. Don’t judge any of your thoughts, just write them down as they come.
When your 10 minutes is up, look over your list and pick your top 3 actions — the ones you think will work best or that you will enjoy doing.
Step 4: Schedule time to do those actions consistently.
This has been a game-changer for me.
In the past, I’ve written down my goals and then forgotten all about them when life got busy. Scheduling the actions into my calendar makes me accountable for doing them.
Put each action in your calendar, on repeat, and set reminders so you actually remember to do them like you would anything else at work.
I promise you if you take these steps, you’ll see your momentum start to build in the next couple of months, and each time you do one of your actions it will get easier and easier!
I hope you found these tips helpful! If you need help tailoring any of them for you and your business, book a consult and we’ll do it together.
